The name Michael originates from the Hebrew phrase Mi-ka-El, which translates to the rhetorical question, "Who is like God?" This powerful declaration serves as the ultimate defense against the spiritual vice of pride—the same pride that led to the fall of the angels. As the leader of the heavenly host, St. Michael stands as a guardian against anything we might erroneously place before God, whether it be worldly ambitions or self-idolatry. His name is a perpetual reminder that nothing and no one is greater than God, offering a steadfast shield against the shadows of ego and the influence of evil.

St. Michael the Archangel,

defend us in battle.

Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.

May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,

and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host,

by the power of God,

cast into hell Satan,

and all the evil spirits,

who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.

Amen.
